“New Themes in Children’s Literature: Death, Shipwreck, War, Disasters… on Shore and the Sea”

      April 23rd and 24th, 2015

      University of Vigo

The Spanish National Research Association on Children’s Literature (ANILIJ) is due to hold its tenth conference in April next year. Once again, we are pleased to invite you to participate in our conference, which, on this occasion, is entitled: “New Themes in Children’s Literature: Death, Shipwreck, War, Disasters… On Shore and the Sea”. Although these themes have been taboo, and thus silenced, for a long time, they can now be traced in current children’s literature in order to accompany children throughout their gloomy moments in life, those hard situations that they must face and the conflicts that affect many generations. These themes have not been deeply analysed yet, but
fiction must approach them to discover the world and the dangers that life poses. As it is widely known, it is obvious that children’s literature can deal with any topic if readers’ feelings and skills are duly considered.

The Conference includes the following scientific aims:

      1. Gather international and national researchers on children’s literature and the members of ANILJ/ELOS (the Galician and Portuguese association on children’s literature) so as to consolidate contact networks and assess teaching and research within this field in all Spanish, European and overseas universities.

      2. Discuss the influence of the studies focused on children’s literature on education policies, as well as the possibilities and limits these policies offer and impose on teaching and research development.

      3. Analyse the current situation regarding research on children’s literature within the Spanish university context in comparison with other fields of study as a whole.

      4. Assess the international promotion of the activities carried out by different research groups in other countries, as well as their impact and connection with other groups on children’s literature.

      5. Debate new methodological approaches applied to the translation of children’s literature.
